There are three main services for students: Microsoft software downloads, hosting space for class or degree-related projects, and access to the facility and workstations. Due to some restrictions, services may require membership in a specific program or major.
Hosting Space for Projects
Web and application hosting is available for students for class projects or degree-related projects. UNIX and open-source software hosting, the preferred hosting method, is readily available. Windows hosting is available on a limited basis and may depend on availability of the Lab's resources and the requirements of the project. All requests must include the project's description, software requirements, and duration (e.g. a masters project may span multiple semesters).
Microsoft Software Downloads
The Hoffman E-Commerce Lab manages and provides email support for subscriptions to the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance (MSDN AA) subscriptions for the Eller College of Management's MIS Department and MBA Program. The MSDN AA subscription essentially allows college units to download a significant set of Microsoft software, including Windows Vista, Windows server products, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Access, and much more, excluding Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
Only those students who meet eligibility can participate in this program. To be eligible for MSDN AA access, an individual must meet one of following requirements within the current semester:
- Currently enrolled in an MIS or MBA class
- Currently an MIS or MBA major
- Currently, a faculty, staff, or student employee of the MIS department, MBA program, or working on a research project from sponsored by the MIS department or MBA program
MSDN AA eligibility is determined every semester. If you have any problems, questions, or concerns, please contact

Access to the Facility
card card reader at entrance The Hoffman E-Commerce Lab can provide 24-hour access via the student's catcard to the facility (excluding building access). Students who can obtain access to the facility are graduate students and students of courses whose faculty members and instructors have specifically requested access to the lab.
A few of the salient features of the lab are the multiple areas for groups to meet. One area is a video conference room that can seat up to eight individuals. It is equipped with a Polycom Soundstation and a computer system enabled with video and voice over ip (VOIP). Another area is the tech classroom for students needing a larger space to collaborate over projects, hold student club meetings, or even to rehearse presentations. The conferencing room and tech classsroom are reservable through the reservations link at the top of the website.
Students should be aware that the Hoffman E-Commerce Lab is catered for courses and projects with special software needs, and priority is given to students who need to use these specially requested software (versus MS Word, Excel, or software found at other common labs).
